The biographies of Abraham Lincoln tell you that on November 4, 1842, he was married to Mary Todd. But his wedding day had once before been fixed for January 1, 1841. The wedding feast was prepared, the guests were assembled, the bride was ready for the ceremony, but the bridegroom came not. After several hours his friends found him beside himself refusing to be cheered up. His friend Herndon writing of this time, many years later, said his life was despaired of. He rarely attended the sessions of the Legislature, of which he had been a conspicuous member, and when he was told that he would die if he did not cheer up, he said, " I would be more than willing," and Abraham Lincoln, as brave a man of action as "ever trod the earth, since first the Almighty sent it circling round the sun," could not get his courage up to the marrying point, until his most intimate friend, who had been married some eight months before, had answered the question, "Are you now in feeling and judgment glad that you are married as you are?" by declaring that he was happier than he ever hoped to be. Then Abraham Lincoln married the woman he had twenty months before disappointed. Hear Moses' wailing cry to God: " I am not able to bear this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray Thee, if I have found favor in Thy sight, and let me not see my wretchedness."
