THE MISCELLANEOUS SUBJECTS OF THE GOSPELS. Abba, is a Syriac word from the Hebrew ah, a father. It was a term by which children affectionately addressed their parents, and was not used by slaves in a family. The term imma or amrnah, mother, was in like manner employed by children. It signifies also, an author, inventor, doctor, or teacher. Mark xiv. 26. Rom. viii. IS. Gal. iv. 6. Abomination Of Desolation, the standards of the Romans, on which were the detestable images of their idols. Mark xiii. 14. Luke xxi. 20. Adoption, the taking of a stranger into a family, in order to make a part of it, acknowledging him as son and heir to the estate: it is that act by which we who were alienated, and enemies, and disinherited, are made the sons of God. Adoption is a relative change, is involved in justification, is witnessed by the Holy Spirit, and is immediately followed by regeneration. John i. 13. Rom. viii. 13. Adultery, an unlawful commerce between one married person and another, or between a married and unmarried person. It is also used for idolatry, Jer. iii. 9. Adulterous generation, means a faithless and impious generation. Matt. xii. 39. Agony, is dreadful anguish, exquisite sorrow. Christ's agony was not produced by any consciousness of guilt, for he was "without sin;" nor by a fear of being deserted by his disciples, and being apprehended by the soldiers, nor by a mere dread of death; but by the Lord laying upon him the iniquity of us all.
