Rich Conaty has for over 30 years hosted the weekly New York City radio program The Big Broadcast on WFUV-FM. Since he features jazz and pop music from the 1920s and '30s on his shows, his CD compilations (of which this is the second) stick to that era, emphasizing rarities. The Big Broadcast, Vol. 2 is mostly in chronological order (except for concluding with an unissued private recording of a 1932 Red Nichols broadcast performance), ranging from 1922 to 1936. Although it has a wide range of styles and moods, each selection has much to offer. Highlights from the 25 performances include a charming Eva Taylor-Clarence Williams vocal-piano duet on "Baby Won't You Please Come Home"; Rube Bloom's virtuosic piano on "Spring Fever"; a forgotten Paul Whiteman recording ("Love and Kisses") that has a fine Red Nichols cornet solo; a charming version of "I Get the Blues When It Rains" by the Fred Rich Orchestra with the Dorsey Brothers; one of Annette Hanshaw's more obscure recordings ("Wasting My Love on You"); the Three Keys on "Oh by Jingo"; a hot number by the Claude Hopkins Orchestra ("Washington Squabble"); and performances by Joe Venuti, a Mezz Mezzrow pickup group (with some fine Bud Freeman tenor), and Don Redman & His Orchestra. Vintage jazz collectors will certainly enjoy this well-conceived offering, which also has excellent liner notes from Conaty. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
