Steve Goodman recorded five albums for Asylum Records between 1975 and 1980, and all of them were out of print when his own label, Red Pajamas Records, licensed tracks for The Best of the Asylum Years, Vol. 1 in 1988. (Later, Red Pajamas licensed the albums themselves.) The 11 tracks on the disc constitute one-fifth of Goodman's total Asylum output, helping to obviate the subjective nature of the selection for an artist who didn't enjoy any hits during the period.
