Steve Goodman recorded five albums for Asylum Records between 1975 and 1980, and all of them were out of print when his own label, Red Pajamas Records, licensed tracks for The Best of the Asylum Years, Vol. 1 in 1988. (Later, Red Pajamas licensed the albums themselves.) The 11 tracks on the disc constitute one-fifth of Goodman's total Asylum output, helping to obviate the subjective nature of the selection for an artist who didn't enjoy any hits during the period. Well-known Goodman compositions like "City of New Orleans" and "You Never Even Call Me by My Name" predate the Asylum years. Probably the most famous song on the disc is "Banana Republics," the gentle depiction of "expatriated Americans" that was covered by Jimmy Buffett. The album is somewhat less eclectic than a regular Goodman album, tending to focus on some of the adult contemporary ballads he recorded in an effort to reach the pop charts. But there are exceptions, notably the philosophical Western swing tune that leads things off, "Between the Lines," the rousing instrumental "Jessie's Jig," the 18th century march "Death of a Salesman" (one of the few humorous songs included), and the faux folk anthem "The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over," which comes complete with a ragged chorus and banjo courtesy of Pete Seeger. A best-of for Goodman's entire career might include only a couple of the tracks heard here, yet there are other good songs on the Asylum LPs, and presumably they are set to appear on The Best of the Asylum Years, Vol. 2. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
