Inspired by the wall-of-strings style associated with Mantovani, the 101 Strings brand appeared on countless orchestral pop and light classical albums conducted, arranged, and performed by mostly anonymous artists. The album Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein pays tribute to the titular songwriting duo of stage and screen with a dozen string-drenched arrangements of classics such as "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Bali Ha'i." Many of the tracks aspire to a heavenly effect with massed strings and cascading harps, but others, including "Oklahoma," prominently feature horns and percussion instruments in energetic arrangements that aren't quite soothing enough to be termed easy listening. "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is a lovely arrangement similar to something Percy Faith would record, but the bombastic "Curtain Time" could pass for a big-band recording. A favorite trick of the 101 Strings franchise was to slip in a handful of original compositions among the well-known melodies, and this album continues that practice with the inclusion of tunes such as "Aisle Talk," composed by staff arranger Joseph Kuhn. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi
