Drawn from Dietrich's stay at Columbia Records from the 1950s and '60s, this ten-song compilation, derived from various concert venues, mixes stereo and mono tracks (the latter "rechanneled" into stereo) successfully, along with an introduction by Noël Coward that's almost worth the price of admission. The repertory covers four decades of her career, from the dawn of the '30s to the end of the '60s. Most of what's here is in English, although Frederick Hollander's "Jonny" is, of course, sung in German; and "La Vie en Rose" is done in French. The most interesting track here is arguably "Go 'Way from My Window," as arranged by John Jacob Niles, which, with its flowing melody and folk-like feel, is quite unlike anything else on this collection. The sound quality, despite the rechanneled stereo, is generally very good, and the only flaw is that there isn't more of this record (Dietrich's Columbia history could easily have yielded a double-LP best-of collection). ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
