Seller's Description:
Fine in Fine jacket. Book Quarto in decorated boards; no dj. Fine, as new. Giftable. American Wilderness Series. 184 pp. including index. Profusely illustrated throughout. The waters of half a continent churn through Louisiana in the formidable currents of the Mississippi and its tributary, the Red River. On the way they feed countless waterways known as bayous. Neighboring states have bayous, but Louisiana has many more. Both swamp and marsh areas. Louisiana's Indian and French heritage is richly recorded in the names of towns and waterways.

"The Bayous" is one of 27 volumes from The American Wilderness series published by Time-Life books in the 1970s. This volume is an informative description of the plants and animals residing in the numerous slow-moving waterways of Louisiana. The term "bayou" derives from "bayuk," the Choctaw Indians' word for creek; presumably they passed it on to the early French settlers who gave us the term we use today. Bayou country is home to many species of birds and the book devotes a fair amount of text and photographs to blackbirds, ducks, egrets, geese, herons, ibises, pelicans, spoonbills, and many others. I did enjoy the text and the wonderful photographic essays in this book, but I would have liked a little more information on the historical/social/cultural aspects of the bayous. Includes detailed map and bibliography.
