From the author of "Battle of Long Tan", this new work is an account of the largest and only unit level battle involving Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War. For 26 days in May and June 1968, units of the 1st Australian Task Force fought a series of actions around Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral. They moved into an area dominated by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong and were forced to adopt a very different style of warfare. From a war of patrolling and ambushing, the Australian forces were confronted with an enemy who actively came looking for a fight. In this account the author includes individual stories of bravery, compassion and humour: the officer who stood in full view of the enemy to direct machine-gun fire and the typical "Digger" who amidst the chaos listened to the race results on Radio Australia. Lex McAulay has spent 22 years in the army, including three tours of Vietnam.
