It is a real shame that so little has been published to ignite a continued interest in the heroic stand of the Royal and Royal Australian Navies during the Battle for Crete. In my search for such I came across this work, first in its abbreviated form in "Sea Battles in Close-Up, Volume 2, edited by Eric Grove by Naval Institute Press. The original provides the full text, with many details edited out for sake of brevity. Two of the three maps and only a few of the 49 images are among the 15 in the abbreviated version. Eleven appendices add many other details, one of which is repeated as warship data boxes in the abbreviated version.
The author packs a lot into the small 144 pages, making this a great reference. Yet there were so many ships and commands that attempting to keep track of which were where at any time was not made much clearer. In my research, this has proven to be a moving target, as no two works seem to agree for many of the vessels involved.
This is certainly a "must have" reference for any interested in understanding the magnitude of devotion to duty and sacrifice in life and material during this phase of the war in the Mediterranean.
