Although now 20 years old McClure's the Bamboos is still a seminal book on the subject of these grasses. Although it is timely, I've yet to find a book that competes or has more information. His written work is sound and not so technical to be illegible, yet informative and scientific enough to retain the attention of an educated reader. It is still the bible text book on Bamboos and I'm waiting for the time when a more comprehensive tome is published which includes the natural requirements of individual bamboo species or world location and natural site environmental requirement or tolerances. Most other Bamboo books are a trifle too gardener friendly to be of use to the talented amateur botanist.
