The moon, nearly at the full, was cleaving her way upward through a shell of dappled clouds, and throwing tree-shadows across the glades of a park in mid-england. Two young men were seated on the turf beside a recently felled log, not upon it, but crouched in its shade, and still further screened by the long fan-like limb of a young beech which spread directly over their heads. As far as their forms could be distinguished, they were both youths of twenty or thereabouts: one, a stout clownish fellow in leather jerkin, leggings and heavy clouted shoes.
