Inasmuch as unity is one of the eternal attributes of the Divine Life, and consequently a spiritual law eternally binding upon the Church, the Lawgiver was inspired so to regulate the national life of the chosen people, that they might as a nation fulfil the obligations of the law, by continuing stedfastly in one visible living fellowship. What were the regulations adopted to that end? Inasmuch as the light of the Divine countenance did not shine forth in all the rays of its everlasting expression, save in the Shekinah above the Ark within the Holy of Holies, the entire people were commanded to assemble, in obedience to the centripetal power of that law of Unity, before the Divine Presence at the appointed centre; that is, in the wrords of Moses, "the place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause His name to dwell there." (Deut. xii. 5.) In the same chapter the people of the ancient Church were solemnly warned again and again, never to depart from the presence of the Lord, by leaving the centre of unity and forming unauthorized religious systems, apart from the place which the Lord had chosen as the habitation of His name. "Ye shall not do so unto the Lord your God. But unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto His habitation shall ye seek, and thither shall ye come." (Deut. xii. 4, 5.)
