This corporate hagiography is fairly typical of the genre. the main pleasure of reading a book like this is to see how everything went wrong subsequently. Schlumberger's acquisition of Fairchild was a major disaster--Fairchild was sold a few years later for a bargain price. Schlumberger concluded that expansion outside the energy space was a mistake, moved its headquarters from NYC back to Houston, and by concentrating on energy, has remained the leader in its field.
