He first subdued the more subordinate animals, on account of their being easily caught and tamed, and used for many years the mere drudges, the ox, the ass, and the camel, instead of the fleet and elegant horse. This noble animal was the last brought into subjection, owing, perhaps, to man's limited and inaccurate knowledge of his nature, and his consequent inability to control him. This fact alone is sufficient evidence of his superiority over all other animals. Surprisingly gentle and remarkably similar to "modern" methods of natural horsemanship, The Arabian Art of Taming And Training Wild And Vicious Horses is different from what is normally expected from such a book. Among several historic methods of fear- and pain-based horse training, including the french method of "tying a cat, belly up, on a stick and having a man shove the cat under the horse to claw it if he did not respond to spurs and whips," it is, to say the least, refreshing to learn of a method used in history which followed the notion that, so long as we make our intentions clear to the horse, he will be willing and happy to obey us.
