I thought of the Ancient Mariner: --"Down dropp'd the breeze, the sails dropp'd down; 'Twas sad as sad could be; And we did speak, only to break The silence of the sea." A curious perforated rock was not more L than a mile or two distant, and we resolved to pull in for it, as I had heard of its singular appearance. On approaching the shore, a natural arch of imposing grandeur met the eye. The lofty cliffs of white chalk are interrupted for a little space by a huge promontory of Hack rock, cutting across the sandy beach, and projecting southward into the sea. The western angle of the mass sends off a spur which runs parallel with the shore, enclosing a snug little cove; and in the midst of this wall-like projection yawns a vast orifice, like an enormous arched gateway, leading into the little recess. This perforation is familiarly known as the Barn-door, or Durdle-door, and is one of the appointed places of resort to visitors. I had the advantage of seeing it in that silent solitude which is so congenial to the feelings when in the presence of some stupendous work of Divine power; no human soul being visible far or near but the old lame and bald-headed shepherd, who had with much difficulty dragged himself down from the elevated downs above, and, having left his crutches on the Bandy beach, was enjoying a bathe in the clear water. Even he disappeared, limping up a ravine in the precipice, before I could get ashore. It was solemn to stand on the angular ledges beneath the arch, and gaze up at its magnificent span. The height ...

Seller's Description:
8vo. xv, [1], 304 pp., plus 6 pp. publisher's ads. With 8 lithograph plates as issued. Green-blue publisher's cloth, embossed ruling in blind on covers, gilt lettering on spine, a.e.g. (very minor shelfwear, slight rubbing, very slight bumping to couple corners), still a NF bright copy, w/ ownership markings of S.F. Mason, Upper Southfields, Leicester on verso of ffep., bookseller's tick for James Vice, Engraver, Printer, Leicester on front pastedown. Second edition, revised & expanded of what many consider to be the first monograph on building and keeping saltwater aquariums. Gosse (1810-1888) substantially revised his very popular work on the aquarium for this edition, including a much fuller description of how to set-up and maintain the parlor aquarium, as well as adding a number of practical discoveries he had made during the two years since the original edition was published. This present edition was the variant edition issued without colour plates by Van Voorst at reduced cost from the 17 Shilling price of the issue with colour chromolithographs. Of particular interest is the advertisement at the end promoting Marine Natural History Classes organized by Gosse beginning in 1855 on the North Devon Coast, in which for a fee he would instruct aspiring Victorian men and women naturalists on how to collect specimens and maintain their aquariums at home.
