Seller's Description:
Very Good. No Dustjacket. Lower corner a bit bumped, some light rubbing and wear; a light 2" crack to rear hinge. A scarce Orange Judd title. The American Apple Orchard is, as Waugh notes, "written from the standpoint of the commercial fruit grower." It is a complete treatise that deals with all aspects of apple culture, ranging from soil preparation, propagation, orchard planning, cultivation, cover cropping, pruning, fertilizing, pest, and disease management, harvesting, and marketing. He includes lists of over 280 varieties of apples, comprehensive black and white photographs and illustrations, and a chapter on "The Family Orchard", which he stresses is of equal importance. Those seeking to learn more about the history of apple production and secrets of the trade will find this work most enlightening. Frank Albert Waugh (1869-1943) was an American landscape architect whose career focused upon recreational uses of national forests, the production of a highly natural style of landscape design, and the implementation of ecology as a basis for choices in landscape design. He essentially pioneered the role of the landscape architect as an integral part of national forest design and development through such projects as the Mount Hood Scenic Byway and the Bryce Canyon scenic roadway. His ideas spread via his diverse writings, including Recreation Uses in the National Forests and The Natural Style in Landscape Gardening. He also wrote prolifically about education, agriculture, and social issues in such works as The Agricultural College and Rural Improvement. A scarce early edition of this classic title.
