The Amazon is one of thirteen volumes in the Time-Life book series The World's Wild Places. In this lavishly illustrated series of books, readers journey to distant and exotic places in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. This book portrays the wilderness of forests and rivers in the Amazon River basin of South America.
Author Tom Sterling has done a good job of presenting the many facets of the Amazon. The first four chapters describe the geology, hydrology, plants, and animals of the region. In chapter five we learn about the explorers and scientists who trekked through the Amazon. These explorers/scientists include Francisco de Orellana, Alfred Wallace, Henry Bates, Richard Spruce, and Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett. Chapter six features the Indians of the Amazon and their way of life. The book concludes with a description of the many threats facing the Amazon wilderness. Includes numerous photographs, maps, bibliography, and index. In sum, this book is a very good overview of a fascinating topic.
