Since the book was about war, it was not something I thought I'd like but I learned some history and it kept my interest

Excellent
This is book six in the American Family Portrait series, which is historical fiction that follows the Morgan family. Cavanaugh's style is much the same as Gilbert Morris, who uses humour, romance and likeable characters set in difficult times, to tell an engaging story. This particular book is set during WW1 and begins when a mother and daughter are aboard the luxury liner, Lusitania when it is torpedoed. Soon Katy joins the war effort as a nurse, and her brother Johnny, as an aviator. Cavanaugh portrays the dog-fights so well, that even I found them interesting, and I don't usually care much for descriptions of aerial battles. He also incorporated the true character of Edith Cavell, a British nurse in Belgium, who was executed by firing squad for helping Allied soldiers to escape occupied Belgium. The characters are not all Christians (at least at the beginning of the book), but there is a deep spiritual message in every one of his books
