Along the way he is beset by criminals, menaced by pirates, molested by vampires, almost devoured by mad gods, and called upon to punch a shark. But the further the companions go in pursuit of the elusive blackmailer, the more impossible the case appears. Then again, in Khelathra-Ven reality is flexible, and the impossible is Ms. Haas' stock-in-trade"--

I love the Sherlock/Eldritch Horror genre. At one point I could not resist a book written in this style.
Fortunately, I read The Affair of the Mysterious Letter after I had read several of these books by a variety of authors. I say "fortunately" because The Affair lifted my standards for such fare to such heights that I can't imagine a better book in this style. If I had read this one first, all of the others would have been distinctly less enjoyable.
First, because Hall didn't take Doyle's creation and chuck in some eldritch gods, I didn't have to stifle that nerdy part of my brain that says "Sherlock Holmes would never do that!" and similar. Instead, Hall built a new universe on the Doyle/Lovecraft framework and holy dancing Dagons, you just have to see it.
Haas is an appallingly powerful and reckless consulting sorceress. Wyndham might seem soft at first glance but he's as tough as they come. Their landlady is ... a surprise I wouldn't dare spoil. The main characters are queer, as are several other characters. But that isn't an Oo Look, Queer Characters Plot Device, thank goodness.
The world and characters are truly fantastic. The world is bizarre and sometimes horrifying. Often it is also hilarious. There is a scene where the two heroes get lost and have to ask for directions that is worth the price of the book alone. The book that you should order, right now.
