Considering that this book was written in the 1960's it is amazing how much it is still relevant today, or perhaps it's just that Southeast Asia is in constant politcal turmoil. Quiller fresh from his debut in The Quiller Memorandum, the shadow executive whose real name we never learn, is brought to Bangkok to prevent the assassination of a top British leader who's in Thailand on a State Visit. The target is only referred to as "The Person". So we never know if it's the PM, one of the Royal Family or the Queen herself, but that isn't necessary to the plot. Once again, Adam Hall's mastery of spy tradecraft shines, his descriptions of Quiller's surveillance methods, tricks for shaking a tail, and even his martial arts prowess are outstanding. Quiller is a street level operative, he doesn't swill shaken martinis, (might put him off his game), doesn't smoke, doesn't even carry a gun, however in this tale he uses a sniper rifle to take out an assassin. There are twists and turns as with all of the Quillers and Hall pushes this one along at a clip, not as breathless as some of the others in the series but still a fun read. My motto: If it's Quiller you can't go wrong.
