Jack is entirely charming and enjoyable as he details the slapstick misadventures of Bandy in WWI. The book reads like an upbeat version of Waugh's "Men at Arms", having laugh out loud situations through to the end. The story has not been dated by t he passing of decades, but don't be looking for an anti-war sensibility here. Canadians are extremely proud of their track record in the world wars and you won't find them apologizing in their literature.
