There are occasional light pencil markings in the margins, without which the book would be Fine. Unclipped DJ has some loss at head and tail of spine, a chip from lower rear corner, and some tears reinforced with tape.; Large 8vo 9"-10" tall; 590 pages.
Deuel's book covers the discovery and recovery of manuscript writings and their decipherment. Subjects covered are: the rebirth of learning in fourteenth century and the efforts of Petrarch and others to find and copy Latin classics; Egyptian papyrology; the recovery of ancient Biblical texts; the Cairo genizah; Aurel Stein's manuscript discoveries in inner Asia; and a short disquisition on indigenous Central American writings. There is a small amount of information on cuneiform and the clay tablets on which it was written, but the book focuses primarily on writings on papyrus, parchment, paper, and other paper-like materials. The book is factually sound, well organized, and full of interest. Its only drawback is its age: one may be sure that since its publication in 1965, there have been further developments in this field which Deuel was naturally unable to cover, not owning a time machine. My paperback copy had been read so many times it was beginning to fall apart and was replaced with a hardback copy.
