Seller's Description:
Very good. Excellent condition, very light shelfwear, pages clean and bright. 80 p. Audience: General/trade. The well-known aphorism states that a picture is worth a thousand words. In the same way a cartoon which highlights the message of a picture can be even more effective still. Thus a skilled cartoonist is one of the most valuable assets a newspaper can have. The Freeman's Journal had such an asset in Ernest Forbes from the beginning of 1920 until its demise in December 1924. Felix Larkin includes 25 representative cartoons in this book. They are arranged under the headings 'Terror' and 'Discord'. The Terror in question was the Reign of Terror by which the crown forces attempted to suppress the independence movement and the Discord referred to the civil war on the issue of the Treaty. With each cartoon, apart from the heading given to it by 'Shemus', the author provides a knowledgeable and invaluable perspective. Felix Larkin is to be congratulated for this fine study which facilitates an unusual glance through the prism of the Shemus cartoons on the course of the Anglo-Irish war and its aftermath. **If you have any queries about this book, please do not hesitate to contact us at hello@ravenbooks. ie**
