John Potter begins by surveying the prehistory of the tenor in the medieval period, when Gregorian chant and early polyphony had implications for a voice-type, and proceeds to the sixteenth century, when singers were first identified as tenors. It is very interesting when I finally got into it...however it is totally different than the impression you get from the book jacket. There is but a brief write up on the 3 Tenors.
It is interesting reading if you are into this type of book....it is defintely not for everyone.
