Near Fine. Original photograph, 8 x 10 inches, depicting a house fire with firefighters at work and a small crowd beginning to gather. Likely taken in Pittsburgh's Hill District, where Harris lived. The photo has Harris' studio stamp on the verso, dated September 1974. Condition is generally Very Good, with some light surface soil and finger creasing at the top right edge. Please see photos. Offered together with a Near Fine copy of the 2011 catalog produced for the large exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (large oblong quarto, stiff wraps, 192 pp., illustrated). Original Teenie Harris (1908-1998) photographs are RARE on the market. Harris was one of the chief photographers of Black life in Pittsburgh from the 1930s on, and was known as "One Shot Harris" for his quick journalistic studies that told evocative stories. He is now considered one of the finest chroniclers of African-American life of the 20th Century.
