Ces elements, toujours tres fascinants, ne sont pas que des accessoires dans la construction d'une oeuvre, mais, indissolublement lies au contexte historique et a la personnalite de l'artiste, ils constituent le support du langage symbolique des images. La technologie des procedes et des materiaux a une place plus evidente encore dans les arts appliques, parfois dits, a tort, mineurs, qui, a chaque epoque - voyez le panorama artistique des XV e et XVI e siecles, mais aussi du xviii e -, jouent un role d'une tres grande importance, voire remplissent une fonction de veritable guide, pour la peinture, la sculpture et l'architecture. Rappelons, par exemple, que Pollaiolo et Verrocchio commencent par pratiquer l'orfevrerie, et que de nombreux peintres manieristes et baroques aiment a concevoir et souvent a realiser eux-memes des bronzes decoratifs et des objets de verre ou de cristal ornes de figures. Au xviii e siecle, la redecouverte, par Bottger, de la formule de la porcelaine est si revolutionnaire et si determinante que le delicat materiau invente en Chine devient l'un des protagonistes du siecle, influencant l'expression du gout dans la peinture et la sculpture, et s'imposant dans le mobilier et jusque dans l'architecture d'interieur, comme en temoignent les cabinets de porcelaine du palais royal de Madrid et de celui de Capodimonte. C'est que, derriere chaque oeuvre, petite ou grande, se cachent un infini travail de recherche et d'innombrables experiences, veritables epreuves alchimiques. De surcroit, le hasard et d'heureuses erreurs entrainent parfois la decouverte de procedes et de methodes que le temps et la pratique d'artistes et de maitres experimentateurs perfectionnent et transmettent a travers les siecles. Les articles de ce guide des arts illustrent les techniques artistiques fondamentales en meme temps que l'origine et l'emploi des materiaux les plus communement utilises dans le dessin, l'estampe, la peinture et la sculpture. Les arts appliques ne sont pas oublies, et une grande partie de ce guide leur est consacree: sont notamment examines la mosaique, la marqueterie, la ceramique, le verre, l'orfevrerie et la joaillerie. Un dernier chapitre presente un bref panorama de divers procedes employes dans l'art contemporain, ceux qui, selon nous, representent le mieux le profond changement irreversible opere dans l'expression artistique du xx e siecle. En revanche, nous n'avons pas aborde dans cet ouvrage la tapisserie et les diverses techniques textiles, qui demandent un traitement a part et detaille. Conformement a l'esprit de la collection Guide des arts, ce volume se propose de fournir une clef de lecture particuliere des oeuvres d'art en montrant par l'illustration comment elles sont faites et en devoilant ainsi au lecteur certains de leurs aspects les plus intimes et les plus caches.
