Of the 814 B-17 and B-24 heavy bombers which set out on the mission 69 failed to return and 11 of the P-38, P-47 and P-51 escort fighters were lost. The Luftwaffe suffered an incredible 67 aircraft either destroyed or written off. These were amongst the heaviest losses suffered by either side on a single operation.
