Written for children ages four and up "Talking to God: Prayers for Children from the World's Religions" offers an ecumenical approach to the world of prayer and religion. The book includes short prayers from many religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, American Indian, and Central African, together with illustrations. Many of the prayers are basic to the particular religion discussed. For example, the Lord's Prayer is included for Christianity, the Shema for Judaism, the Call to Prayer for Islam, and the Metta meditation for Buddhism. Some of the other prayers may be less familiar. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful and enhance each prayer given in the book.
The well-known children's author, Demi, selected the prayers, illustrated the book, and also wrote an eloquent Preface. "What more precious gift could a child receive from its parents than the timeless wisdom contained in the world's religions?", the author begins. "For each of these heavenly-ordained traditions has important lessons to instruct our children and help mold their characters". Demi's short notes at the end of the book explain the context of each prayer and the nature of each illustration.
There is sincerity, depth, and an ecumenical spirit throughout this book. Parents who wish their children to understand from a young age the breadth of the different spiritual traditions and religion will enjoy giving this book to their children and discussing it. In addition to the prayers of individual religions, the book includes illustrations of diverse people praying together in their own ways.
