James, who had been listening very attentively all this while, seemed much surprised to hear such a speech from the minister, and could not help saying, "I thought, sir, it was the duty of every man to be as charitable to the poor as he could. I am sure, my father has often told us so, and I think I have heard you say so too in the pulpit." Mr. Meek smiled, and said, "So you think, James, that I recommend one thing from the pulpit, and another--" "No," said James, eagerly interrupting him, and deeply blushing as he spoke, " no indeed, sir. I never thought any such thing; but I was afraid I had not understood you rightly." Mr. Meek.--I really don't wonder that you should think me a little inconsistent, James; for when people speak of charity, they generally mean, giving alms to grangers. But I have a very different notion of that kind of charity which religion recommends. It is, as you say, the duty of every Christian to be charitable; but this I understand to mean, doing good from a benevolent disposition. Now, it is my opinion, that we may do a great deal of harm by serving strangers at our doors. We injure our poor neighbours whom we know to be in want, and who have a good right to our assistance, when we give what should be bestowed on them to vagrants, who may impose oil us by artful tales. And as to those vagrants themselves, they would be much better men, much happier, and far more useful, if they were to settle in a place where they were known, and use their honest industry to gain their bread. So that, you see, by the kind of charity you speak of, in place of doing good, we do a real injury, even to the objects we wish to relieve.
