These stories picture the lives of simple, hardy fishermen and their Esquimo neighbors, their hard fight with an always hostile nature, and the traits of sturdiness, honesty and self-sacrifice which their stern life develops. As a picture of life in a little-known part of the world the book is interesting; as it reveals the author's lore for and loyalty to the people, it commands sympathy. It lacks the deep insight essential to great literature. Neither in style nor language does it denote the writer of mark.
