I used to hang in New York, sometimes before the hammer fell on the Times Square area in the name of "reform". You wouldn't believe the difference in this once gloriously debauched part of the island. Of course, it wasn't Disneyland and that had to be fixed. Friedman's straight-forward approach to reporting on his time there is refreshingly lacking the obvious tendency towards shock-value and is appropriate for the subject matter. Pulling no punches, while not trying for the expose angle, he pulls back the curtain to reveal the cigar-chomping old-timers as well as some of the slightly sad, if not pathetic, characters of the area. I found that his overall lack of any sort of "activism" in his ramblings to be entertaining and vital in presenting a time period that may become lost, if not already. Highly recommended.
