Penniforth Octavius Rodgers, otherwise known as Penny, narrates stories about different places, times, and people of this mystical land which is comprised of 50 different realms. The unique characters are not all mundane; some have very special gifts and abilities. Unfortunately for some, the gifts come from dark magic. In this world, there are magical serpents, trolls, dwarves, fairies, pirates, man-eating plants, and other mystical beings, some of which were previously unknown to me.
There are fourteen tales and one poem. The stories cover a range of topics, from a clockmakerÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢s treasured clocks to a young girl who wanders where she should not, to a serpent who makes a deal to share his treasures for a more meaningful life. Each tale has its own theme and often a lesson to be learned. The majority reminded me of the original GrimmÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢s Fairy Tales, which were a bit darker than the ones that most read today. I have to admit that I loved the darker aspect!
I enjoyed immersing myself in this magical land of Asterra. I know other readers who grew up enjoying fairy tales like GrimmÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢s Fairy Tales will really want to read this book. I would also suggest that Ã?¢ââ??¬Ã?"Tales of Asterra,Ã?¢ââ??¬Ã?Â? be considered as required reading material for either a Creative Writing or a Popular Fiction course. Not only will students be inspired by RizzoÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢s creative abilities, they will also be pleased to have something fun to read.
In Ã?¢ââ??¬Ã?"Tales from Asterra, gifted writer Michael Frank Rizzo has created a magical world. Many of the stories have beautiful illustrations that were created by talented illustrator Alejandro Colucci. It is clear that an incredible amount of work went into bringing Asterra to life. In addition to the beautiful illustrations, I found the glossary, endnotes, and bibliography to not only be helpful, but also demonstrative of how much thought Rizzo put into creating these amazing stories. I also appreciated that he included an Appendix of Magic to help explain the basics of magic. I truly hope with all the work that went into creating this world, Asterra does not end here. I hope to see more tales about this amazing land.
