Odd, but interesting
As the book's back cover says, this story happens in war-torn Colombia. In a small village, all the men and boys are kidnapped by guerillas, and the women have to remake their lives without males. The women all eventually turn into self-reliant, confident humans, which is so simplistic, it was a hard to swallow, and I kept thinking, "This has to have been written by a woman." But, no, a broad-minded man wrote it. It's kind of like science fiction, and does make one think, "What if?"
Interspersed between the chapters (which have actual, helpful titles), are very, very grim, short "chronicles" of the violent men in the guerilla and para-military.
Lesson: Men are bad, women are good.
