There is plenty of variety on bassist John Goldsby's quartet set. With strong playing from pianist Bill Mays, altoist Andy Fusco, and drummer Terry Clarke, Goldsby explores such numbers as Charles Mingus' driving "O.P.," a solo bass rendition of "Twilight Time," "Tricotism," and Duke Ellington's always catchy "Pitter Panther Patter." With the exception of Mays' "Three Short Stories for Contrabass and Piano" (which is over 13 minutes long), "Twilight Time," and the Ellington piece, all of the selections were written by bassists: Mingus, Paul Chambers, Oscar Pettiford, Red Mitchell, Sam Jones, and two numbers from Goldsby. The music ranges from swing to post-bop with the flexible musicians sounding quite comfortable in each setting, playing creative and swinging versions of the high-quality material. Though John Goldsby has not become famous, this is a CD well worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
