an engrossing book
This book was a gift to a teenage boy who enjoyed other Clavell books so I think he would enjoy this one. I read the book many years ago and enjoyed it both for its content and for the writing.

Tai Pan
James Cavell is a marvelous writer. In Tai Pan, he brings us a world far different from ours and so exotic that we can almost smell the ocean, the perfume of Asia, and even the rotting fish on the docks. The birth of Hong Kong. The cultural undercurrent and the all important Face saving manuvers involved. And yes, a romance that crosses cultures, continents and years. A love story in the midst of war and business and financal intrigue. This book is thoughtful, intellegent and exciting. Give it a chance and then move on to the "sequel"...Noble House. You will love it even more.
