Excerpt from Tables of the Value of Gold and Silver Per Ounce Troy, at Different Degrees of Fineness: With Other Tables, Which Will Be Found Useful to Bankers, Assayers, Chemists, Merchants, Dealers in Bullion and Ores What we usually call fineness, therefore, is simply the weight of fine metal contained in any given quantity of mixed metals or alloys. For instance, in a gold or silver bar which is reported to be 850 fine, it is simply meant that in 1000 parts by weight, 850 are fine gold or fine silver, as the case may be. In our mints, the value of gold is computed from standard weight; that is, gold which is 900 fine, that being the fineness of our gold coin as required by law. The formula in this case is, 43 ozs. Of standard gold are worth $800. Hence, multiply standard ozs. By 800, and divide by 43, and you Obtain the value.
