The UN's old principle of consent, and non-use of military force has become seriously compromised and has lost considerable ground in the profile of 1990s peacekeeping. Interventions have been conducted in situations where conflict has not yet been terminated at the time of international deployment. These dramatic shifts in the nature of conflicts in the post-Cold War period need a mixture of both traditional and modern peacekeeping approaches.
