A bold question to ask, perhaps, yet one which is fully warranted by the well established facts that the old methods do not teach the use of the language, and that no book has yet been produced which does it effectually by the new and improved methods. The Syntaxe Pratique, here offered to teachers and students, is at least a working text-book from which a knowledge both practical and theoretical will be obtained with ease; for all the drudgery has been done beforehand by the author, who has had a unique experience as a teacher in the class room. This Syntax makes study interesting: the learner has not to battle with the dry and really unpractical system which states the rule first, the examples afterwards, inverting thereby the rational order of things; he is given first a few well selected sentences, in which his attention is directed to a principle practically illustrated the rule follows of itself, often discovered by the student, with what profit, it is needless to say. The Syntaxe has been written in French, because French Syntax in English is practically valueless. The first part of the work constantly shows the characteristic differences between the French and the English Languages.
