The first two classed as Italian opera and mark the furthest reach of Italian melody as applied to dramatic purposes. They reveal also the result of the influence of Gluck in the importance they assign to poetic truth and natural action, uniting some of the chief excellences of the Italian and French schools. "Marriage of Figaro, " 1786; history of its composition, origin of the libretto; characters and plot. Its levity redeemed by its refined humor and lofty musical beauty.
