Graphite is pure carbon, having a greasy feel and a black metallic lustre. Uses. Best qualities for lead pencils and crayons. Its most important use is for making crucibles and other refractory materials. As a lubricant; advantages. Inferior grades for stove polish. In electrotyping. Occurrence. Most abundant in old metamorphic rocks. Theory of its organic origin. Graphite found in pig iron: why. Distribution. Widely distributed, but mined in but few countries. Production for 1891 in metric tons (2204lbs.). Austria ' 21,346. Ceylon ' 20,349. Germany 3,824. Japan 2,479. Italy 2,415. United States 707. Canada 236. Product of Alibert mine, Siberia, used for best pencils. ('eylon product noted for purity. Austria. l'be Austrian deposits are in gneiss and schist; in places eighteen feet thick. ' Ceylon. The veins are in gneiss; some of the graphite 99.79% carbon. In Bavaria a vein in gneiss sometimes 16 feet thick; product impure. Japan; Italy; India. Canada. In veins and thin seams in Laurentian rocks; most important deposits in P. Quebec. United States. lIany occurrences. The only mines worked at Graphite, near Ticonderoga, N. Y., and at Cranston, R. 1., where it is associated with anthracite. lt occurs in the Coal Measures of New Mexico. Gunnison co., Colo.; graphite beds two feet thick. Albany co., Wyoming; in veins.
