The movie was pretty good and the book concerning the film is even more entertaining. Its not gory so people with a weak stomach can still enjoy reading about the horror musical.
Its broken down into several large sections. It traces all the various versions of Sweeney Todd throughout history from the penny dreadful days to the Burton film. Best of all there is a chapter for each character explaining the creative process of bringing them to screen. Of course Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovette receives a larger section than Turpin or Anthony. This is still a great look at the writing process and how the actors auditioned.
There is only a portion of the script unlike most companion books where the full scripts are included. Only sections of the lyrics are included. Several songs are missing, but its still great to read.
I really loved the photographs. Burton included some sketches he did for Sweeney Todd which some might find interesting. I really didn't care for the drawings since they resembled the characters out of the Corpse Bride. The Photographs are of top quality. Nice and clear. I think there are more than two hundred, but have not counted. Its especially nice to see the behind the scene pictures. There are some of Helen Boham Carter singing in the recording booth that are interesting. As stated before the pictures are not gruesome as the movie itself.
There are faux blood splatter on some of the pages and blood in the Burton sketches, but the art work is quite tame compared with the film.
This book is a must for Sweeney Todd fans or fans of either Burton or Johnny Depp. With oodles of imformations this book can be read again and again.
