The bundle looks like some great bird of prey, shrieking as it rushes down at a tremendous pace through the air, till at last it comes down with a thud upon the ground below. The hay season begins about the middle of July, and continues in some parts of the country till the end of August. The same field is cut sometimes twice, or even three times. Even the early crops are usually very poor and thin. In the valley of Gudbrandsdal, parts of which are very dry, an ingenious system of irrigation has been devised. Water is carried from the streams, which intersect the valley, often for many miles in long wooden troughs, formed out of the trunks of young pines cut lengthwise and hollowed out in the middle. Similar troughs carry the water down on to the farms where it is wanted, and furnish also the supply required for various domestic uses. Of cereals, by far the most important is barley, from which the fladbrbd, " flat bread," the staple food of the country is chiefly made.3 Both threshing and grinding are done by water-power, a water-mill being an almost invariable accompaniment of a Norwegian farm.
