Ms Etcoff does an admirable job of reviewing the studies relating to good looks and whether having beauty gives one an advantage. She also addresses the question whether there is any objective standard of beauty that crosses cultural and ethnic divides. It is very interesting to learn of the attributes that give a man or woman an initial advantage in our own culture - e.g. most CEOs are taller than average. Although this book is based on academic work, it is written in a most accessible style.
