Mike Hammer, protagonist on crime and mayhem in the Big Apple of Mickey Spillane's serial novels, is called to investigate a most heinous murder. Hammer 's involvement is captured by the vic, a slight, slight friend from the past who calls Mike to him in time for Mike to see him die. Mike latches onto the case light a bulldog gnawing a choice steak.
Meanwhile, the knowledge of a matter of national security is inflicted on the politicos of the city who elect to put a damper on their story in order to avoid mass hysteria and riots. This is in tandem with Mike's personal murder workings. Mike gets a good whiff of all because he is a private investigator whose "eye" misses nothing. Neither does his nose fail him for danger.
This is a man who uses women as well as men to achieve his ends; even his Girl Friday, Velda - who is nuts about him, who is his "girl" - gets the treatment. She is willing, though, for her man.
The plot holds it all together and just needs to be sorted out by the reader.
