Born in Bromley, Kent, England, Stamp developed an early passion for architecture, inspired by the rich Victorian and early 20th-century buildings that surrounded him. He was educated at Dulwich College and went on to study at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he read history. Stamp later earned his Ph. D. With a thesis on the Gothic Revival architect George Gilbert Scott, Jr. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a lifelong career dedicated to architectural history and preservation. Stamp began his professional career teaching at the Mackintosh School of Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art. His time in Glasgow deepened his appreciation for the city's architectural landscape, particularly the works of Alexander "Greek" Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He became an authority on these architects, advocating for the recognition and preservation of their contributions to architectural design. An influential voice in architectural criticism, Stamp wrote extensively for journals and magazines. Under the pseudonym "Piloti, " he penned the long-running "Nooks & Corners" column in Private Eye magazine. Through his sharp and often witty commentary, he critiqued contemporary developments and championed the cause of historic buildings threatened by neglect or demolition. His writings were instrumental in raising public awareness about the importance of architectural conservation. Stamp authored several notable books, including "The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme" (2006), which examined Sir Edwin Lutyens' iconic World War I memorial, and "Britain's Lost Cities" (2007), a poignant reflection on urban architectural losses due to wartime bombing and post-war redevelopment. His work often highlighted the cultural and historical significance of buildings, urging for their preservation. A committed preservationist, Stamp was actively involved with organizations such as the Victorian Society and co-founded the Thirties Society (now the Twentieth Century Society) to protect interwar architecture. He believed in recognizing the value of buildings from all periods, not just those traditionally deemed historic. Throughout his career, Gavin Stamp remained a passionate advocate for architectural heritage. His dedication influenced public opinion and policy regarding conservation practices in the UK. Stamp's legacy endures through his extensive writings, his impact on preservation efforts, and the many students and professionals he inspired. He passed away on 30 December 2017, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to shape the discourse on architectural history and the importance of preserving our built environment for future generations.; 29.5 x 25 x 3.5 cms; 362 pages.
