Ere Mahomet had birth, But after Christ's departure from this earth, O'er Yemen's fertile land Abu Navass held absolute command: A worshipper was he of fire; But of a noble son was sire, Who the foul rites of fire abhorred, And the true God adored. This youth Christ's doctrine taught, And many miracles through faith he wrought, Till they that fire adored Confessed that Christ was Lord. Abu Navass in ire Said to his son: 'This instant worship fire; Tor death, as swift as sure, Is thine unless this god thou do abjure.' His son made answer: 'I For Christ will gladly die.' His sire commanded then that he Should from a rock be cast into the sea; Straight was the order executed; yet Nor was he hurt, nor were his garments wet. Then, at the order of the furious sire, They cast him into fire; Receiving him, the fire its fury tames; Around him harmless play the flames; In love they seem to rise And lick innocuously his eyes. Abu Navass then gave command that he Should, next, be fastened to a tree, That archers then should dart Their arrows at his heart--Though truly at the mark the archers shot, Their arrows hurt him not. Then said the youth: '0 father, own The God I worship to be God alone.' 'But only tell me this, I pray thee, ' His father said, 'the secret how to slay thee.' 'Thus'--said the youth--' one arrow at me aim In my God's name.' Abu Navass made instantly reply: 'In thy God's name, then, mayst thou die.' Forth from his hand the fatal arrow flew, And the young martyr slew.
