A brooding air of mystery hung over the locked-in valley. Only Rock's blazing sixgun could free her from the unseen peril. Pearl Zane Grey was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that were a basis for the Western genre in literature and the arts; he idealized the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage was his best-selling book. Grey became one of the first millionaire authors. With his veracity and emotional intensity, he connected with millions of readers worldwide, during peacetime and war, and inspired many Western writers who followed him. In addition to the commercial success of his printed works, they had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. He was a major force in shaping the myths of the Old West; his books and stories were adapted into other media, such as film and TV productions and as of 2012, 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, had been made that were based loosely on Grey's novels and short stories.

What can I say about this book? Sunset Pass is vintage Zane Grey--what most people expect to find. Trueman Rock, a man who can use a gun to fight cattle rustlers and crooked men, when he returns home to Wagontongue, he expects trouble from his old enemies, but he finds new enemies as well. Ash Preston was the meanest, most violent man True has ever come up against, and not only that, the brother of the girl he loves, Thiry Preston. This is a good book; solid, with believable characters, reasonable, difficult situations for the hero and heroine to overcome, and romance as only Zane Grey can tell it. Four out of five stars is about right as to a rating. Good, but not great; better than almost anything written today. I recommend it.
