definitely recommended for students
anyone studying for a science which needs a thorough understanding could do worse than use this text. far worse.
the first few chapters deal with the chemical basics used for organic chemistry and it has to be said that solomons explains these in a way very easy to grasp.
weve all read technical books which try to use the 'informal' approach, and these unofrtunately tend to go off on tangents or leave you puzzled as to exact definitions or rules.
solomons strikes a balance here. it comes across as being informal whilst being direct and explaining all the technical aspects needed to be understood.
the layout goes through the basic chemistry followed by groups and reactions giving the reader a solid foundation for the more detailed chemistry of the functional groups that follows.
the result is that the text is easy to learn from and allows you to focus on work rather than whizzing through other texts or the internet trying to clarify points.
quite possibly the best book on the subject for the undergraduate/a level student.
