"I'll wring your neck the next time I catch you!' roared the boor in a great rage. "But you can't catch me," said the bird; and, spreading its wings, flew away to the woods, singing as it went, and never again would trust itself near his snares. CEKTAIN king had a favourite son, named Jonathas, to whom he left, as all his inheritance, a ring, a brooch, and a piece of cloth, which appeared to be of small value, but in reality were the richest possessions a man could desire. For these three things were powerful talismans; and on his deathbed, the father explained to Jonathas their use. So long as he kept the ring, all men and women could not help loving him; whoever wore the brooch, had only to wish for whatever he pleased and have it to his heart's content; by sitting on the cloth and desiring to be conveyed to any spot on the earth, he would find himself there at once. Left to his own resources, while still young and ignorant of the world, Jonathas was soon able to prove the virtue of his talismans. As the wearer of the ring, old and young beheld him with affection and were willing to do all they could to serve and please him. Among others who were thus fascinated by this secret charm, was a beautiful but selfish and artful woman, whose wiles were so successful that he grew to return her love...
