There is no publication date printed but it is thought to be 1943 and might be a First (thus) edition of this translation, according to Zempel's First Editions A Guide to Indentification. No dust jacket. Quarter bound: tan cloth spine with blue lettering & decorative border with pictorial paper covered boards. Well worn at edges & corners. Darkeneing/dust staining to spine. Tanned end pages. Heavy foxing to textblock edges & scattered through text, mostly toward margins. There are 16 Alexander Alexeieff illustrations total. These include 7 plates with strikingly beautiful full color lithographs, including frontispiece. There are 8 black & white Alexeieff drawings printed on pages within breaks of the stories. There is also a small drawing of a bear on the title page. The 8 Tolstoy stories were originally published in Tolstoy's original Russian language versions between 1872 and 1886. (223 pages)
